In a frightening accident at Dodger Stadium on Saturday night, Delino DeShields collided with Raul Mondesi on a fielding play, was knocked unconscious for a short time and was taken by ambulance to Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, where he was admitted for X-rays and evaluation.

He suffered a concussion and was being held overnight for observation.

The Montreal Expos, after rallying to tie the score in the ninth inning, beat the Dodgers, 8-6, in the 11th on a two-run home run by Lenny Webster.

In the seventh inning, DeShields, going back on a pop fly hit by Mike Lansing, collided with Mondesi near the right-field line about 20 feet beyond the infield. He spun around, landed hard on his back and lay motionless as trainers and players ran to his side.

DeShields regained consciousness before he was helped onto a stretcher and rolled into an ambulance, which entered through the center-field gates and waited on the warning track in short right field, near where DeShields had lain for about 14 minutes with little movement. Mondesi, who somehow held onto the ball, took several steps before he too, collapsed, but he recovered quickly and stayed in the game.

DeShields and Mondesi were watching the ball all the way, with Mondesi charging from right field. DeShields was reaching for the ball when Mondesi hit him from behind, and he went down hard.

Manager Tom Lasorda called for a doctor, and Joel Fechter of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic ran to DeShields. When DeShields arrived at the hospital, he was met by Drs. Glenn Reinhart and Michael Mellman, the team physician.

The collision came with the Dodgers leading the Expos, 6-2, before 39,167. As Expo Marquis Grissom, DeShields’ best friend, looked on, play was stopped for 16 minutes. When the seventh inning resumed, the Expos rallied for three runs to pull within 6-5.

In the ninth against Todd Worrell, Grissom walked, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Randy Milligan.

In the 11th against Roger McDowell (0-1), Larry Walker singled and scored on Webster’s homer.

For DeShields, the accident was the latest obstacle in what has become a difficult transition with his new team. The trade to the Dodgers for Pedro Martinez took him by surprise, as it did his teammates, and he had said he missed his former team greatly.

In spring training, the week before the season began, DeShields suffered a broken cheekbone in a freak accident in the batting cage.

DeShields had out-patient surgery on his cheekbone and had to wear a protective mask for a couple of games. But he healed quickly.

Shortly after the season started, a 15-year-old injury began to act up, leaving DeShields’ left thigh weak. It has impaired his ability to hit and limited his lateral movement in the field. Sometimes, he even has trouble getting a jump out of the batter’s box. He batted .125 on the team’s eight-game trip and was batting .200 before Saturday’s game.

The Dodgers scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead. With one out in the first inning, Brett Butler drew a walk from Rodney Henderson, who made his first major league start and his second appearance ever in the majors. Mike Piazza doubled in Butler and Tim Wallach took Henderson deep into the left-field pavilion for a two-run homer.

In the second inning, DeShields drove in two runs when he hit an opposite-field flare through the hole to left field. After the Expos’ Walker hit a two-run single, Henry Rodriguez homered in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-2.

But after DeShields was taken away by ambulance in the seventh inning, the Expos rallied against starter Ramon Martinez for three runs. Grissom tripled in two runs and then scored on a groundout.

DeShields and Grissom, who came up in the minors together, spent time together after Friday night’s game. Best friends, DeShields said it was good for him to to talk with Grissom about the struggles he has had this season.
