TOMMY JOHN

Although John played parts of four seasons with the Angels, the left-hander spent perhaps the best years of his 26-year major league career as a Dodger from 1972 through 1978. His 7-1 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates 18 years ago today was his first after surgery to repair an elbow injury that sidelined him for nearly two years. John was the National League’s comeback player of the year in 1976 and helped the Dodgers win pennants in ’77 and ‘78, winning 20 games in ’77. Now 50, he is a broadcaster for the Minnesota Twins.

BOBBY GRICH

Nearly flawless as a fielder, Grich hit for power and average. A cornerstone of all three of the Angels’ divisional championship teams, Grich set a major league record in 1985 by fielding .997 and ranks among the top three in nine Angel lifetime batting categories. Grich’s 10 years with the club and 17-year major league career ended in 1986. Now 45 and living in the Long Beach area, he spends much of his time playing golf.
