CARSON : Hearing Scheduled on Adult-Business Laws

Share

Responding to residents’ concerns about adult businesses in Carson, city officials have scheduled a public hearing on an ordinance to limit the location of businesses that sell sexually explicit goods.

A shop that sells novelties and one where lingerie is modeled moved into the city in the last year, prompting the council to adopt an emergency ordinance. The law requires at least 1,000 feet between two adult businesses or between them and elementary schools, parks or the Carson Civic Center.

The city also requires any new adult business to get a conditional-use permit. The two established businesses have two years to get a permit or close down, city planner Sheri Repp said.

Because the emergency ordinance was passed quickly, the city wanted to give residents a chance to discuss adult businesses in a public hearing. The emergency ordinance will be replaced after the hearing, Repp said.

Repp said adult businesses cannot be banned from the city. “The city has to provide a reasonable opportunity for these businesses to operate,” she said.

The hearing will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers at City Hall.
