America West Slashing Fares for Certain Flights
America West Airlines began a round of fare cuts Wednesday on certain flights, including some at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport.
The price reductions began as a round of deeper discounts initiated by Northwest Airlines and matched by other major carriers expired. Unlike those, America West’s low fares do not cover all markets.
The new fares, for travel through Nov. 16, shave a third off so-called leisure fares--those that require a 14-day advance purchase--on some of the airline’s longer routes.
America West offers 16 daily round-trip flights from John Wayne Airport. With the discount, the price of a round-trip ticket to New York will be $448 instead of the regular $623; to Chicago, $418, down from $569, and to Dallas, $358 instead of $485.
The fare discounts do not cover America West flights to two popular destinations from Orange County: Las Vegas and Phoenix, where the carrier is based.
