AND ONE MORE THING: “Buckshot LeFonque,” due in July from Columbia, is the name of the new Branford Marsalis project--a collaboration with DJ Premier of rap group Gang Starr that features appearances by poet Maya Angelou (reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”), Ruben Blades, the late Albert Collins and former Springsteen sidekick Nils Lofgren. The first single, “Breakfast at Denny’s,” is about the controversy over the restaurant chain’s alleged racially discriminatory practices and incorporates part of a Jay Leno monologue. Buckshot LeFonque, by the way, was a pseudonym used by jazz great Cannonball Adderley on his independent projects.
