EXPOSITION PARK : New Stamp Honors Black Cavalry Unit
The Buffalo Soldiers helped settle the West with little notice, but the U.S. Postal Service is hoping a new stamp commemorating them will bring recognition to the little-known black cavalry unit.
Last week the Postal Service issued a 29-cent stamp depicting four African American soldiers on horseback. The stamp pays tribute to the 9th and 10th Cavalry created in the late 1860s, which served in California, Texas and the Western territories.
“This stamp will help tell the story everywhere,” said Larry Dozier, a spokesman for the Postal Service. “There are so many people who have never heard of the (Buffalo Soldiers).”
The stamp premiered in Los Angeles at the California Afro-American Museum--a day after it was officially unveiled April 22 in Dallas during the Afro-American League United for Success national convention.
The Postal Service will issue 185 million of the stamps.
