REGION : Public Hearing to Be Held on Beach Funding

Share

The County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing today on funding of lifeguards and beach groomers on beaches not owned by the county.

The county is facing a $900-million budget deficit, and officials have threatened to pull services from Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach on July 1 if the cities do not contribute more money.

City councils in both cities have refused the county requests for more funds, saying that the majority of beach visitors do not live in their cities.

The county’s 105 lifeguards watch over swimmers year-round on 31 miles of beaches, including those in the South Bay.

City officials have said they will find other ways to care for the beaches and protect swimmers and surfers if the county cannot.
