UNO IN CHINA: Numero Uno is living...

UNO IN CHINA: Numero Uno is living up to its name. The Van Nuys-based chain has set up shop in the city of Shenzhen, claiming to be the first American pizzeria to open an outlet in mainland China’s Free Trade Zone. . . . The Chinese Uno, however, won’t be exactly the same. “The pizzas are substantially smaller,” company President Ron Gelet said. “The Chinese don’t have the same appetite as we do.”

POPULAR DOGS: The phones at the West Valley Animal Shelter never stopped ringing Wednesday, and no wonder. In all, hundreds called in hopes of adopting the homeless yellow Labrador retriever and her 11 pups featured in Wednesday’s Times. . . . The lucky winner was radio talk-show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger and her family, who will keep the mother and one puppy, and give the rest away. “It’s Mother’s Day, and I’m mushy,” she said.

FITTING IN: Girl Scouts, besides serving humanity, have a right to look good too. Why should they have to wear outfits that fell out of fashion years ago? So, starting this month, the girls (ages 8 to 11) are donning new duds, above, sporting a more stylish jade instead of Kelly green. . . . “It’s what kids would wear these days,” a San Fernando Valley Girl Scout Council official said.

ANGEL IN WAITING: G. C. (Brodie) Broderson, 64, isn’t ready to give up the fight against crime. Broderson, a Guardian Angel, wants to set up a foot patrol on Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys to chase away prostitutes and drug dealers (B3). . . . So far, however, no motels have given the Angels permission to patrol their properties.

PUNISHMENT: The practice of swatting a player, called “the block,” may be outlawed, but that doesn’t stop Granada Hills High baseball Coach Darryl Stroh from wishing that he could turn back the clock. He called it a “wonderful way of encouraging attitude adjustment.” . . . Meanwhile, Simi Valley High Coach Mike Scyphers remains under investigation for using the method (C1).
