Career Fair Explains Youth Job Options

Share

Simi Valley teen-agers looking for a summer job will have a chance Saturday to meet with prospective employers and learn about career options.

Fifty-two employers from eastern Ventura County are expected to attend the city’s eighth annual Youth Employment Service Job and Career Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mountain Gate Plaza at Los Angeles Avenue and 1st Street.

Last year, about 1,000 people between the ages of 16 and 22 participated. Organizers expect at least the same turnout this year.

Among the businesses that will be represented are retail stores, insurance companies, modeling agencies, fast-food restaurants, the military and law enforcement.

Organizer Sandra Thompson said about half the businesses are recruiting for summer and full-time positions, while the others offer information on career opportunities.

For students who haven’t already lined up summer work, Thompson said the job fair is a good place to start.

“We always have a big rush of people calling us the day school’s out saying, ‘I want to work this summer,’ but then it’s too late,” she said.

For best results, Thompson said teen-agers should come prepared to fill out applications that ask for previous job experience, Social Security number, school information and personal references.
