CANOGA PARK : Show to Raise Funds for Damaged Church

Parishioners at St. Joseph the Worker Church will hold a variety show May 21 to raise money to renovate their quake-damaged church.

The Catholic church at 19803 Sherman Way in Canoga Park suffered about $200,000 in losses in the temblor, according to Pastor Jim Gehl. Significant damage was caused to a 5,000-pipe organ, the bell tower and the ceiling.

The show, “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” will feature singing, dancing, musical acts and actors performing two scenes from the musical comedy “Sister Act.” With tickets going for $3 a person, organizers say they are less concerned with making money than they are with restoring parish morale.

“We don’t expect to raise big bucks from this, but we hope to bolster people’s spirits and come together as a parish family,” Gehl said. “We’re just going to have fun.”

The event will be held at Msgr. Greene Hall at 7 p.m. For information, call (818) 341-6634.
