SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Jose Montenegro was a one-man wrecking crew.

The South Gate shortstop-catcher made his first pitching appearance of the season an impressive one, fanning six batters and tossing a two-hit, 3-0 victory over Roosevelt. The Eastern League make-up game was Monday at Evergreen Park.

Montenegro also provided all the offense the Rams would need, doubling twice, driving in a run and scoring a run.

The Rams pounded eight hits off Roosevelt starter Fernie Garcia, who suffered his first defeat of the season.

Garcia struck out eight batters, but had trouble finding the strike zone, walking six.

The Roughriders squandered the few scoring opportunities they received, stranding a runner on third with no outs in the first and fourth innings.

Brothers Alex and Juan Carlos Rodriguez managed the only hits for the Roughriders, with a double apiece.

Six of the Rams’ eight hits were singles.
