Park rangers tracked and killed an adult female mountain lion in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Monday, a day after a big cat charged a child.

State and federal trackers found the 83-pound lion after a brief search. An Arizona family hiking in the park in San Diego County told officials that the animal bared its teeth and crouched to spring.

According to state officials, a lion rushed to within five feet of a 3-year-old boy on a trail near Paso Picacho campground. The boy’s father said he managed to scare the cat off.

In Northern California last week, trackers hunted and killed a mountain lion suspected of mauling a jogger to death April 23 on a secluded mountain trail.
