If Pac-10 Prevails Over NCAA, Huskies Will Return to TV

Despite a recent NCAA ruling to the contrary, the Pacific 10 Conference will let the University of Washington football program appear on television this season.

The Huskies, who last week announced they had been put on an additional year’s probation and banned from television through 1994 by the NCAA Committee on Infractions, are scheduled to make at least two, possibly three appearances on ABC: Sept. 3 at USC, Sept. 10 against Ohio State and Sept. 24 at Miami.

According to Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen, once ABC announces its matchups, the conference or university cannot amend the schedule. In this case, Hansen said, Washington’s penalty will be suspended until next season.

Among Washington’s nonconference opponents next year are Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Still in question is the NCAA’s stance on Washington’s television future. It is conceivable the NCAA could ignore the Pac-10 and insist the Huskies serve their penalty as planned.

The Committee on Infractions convenes June 5 in Kansas City, where Washington officials will argue for reduced sanctions, including abolishment of the television ban.
