CAMARILLO : Military, Homemade Planes Due at Fly-In
Dozens of pilots flying homemade and experimental planes will land at Camarillo Airport this weekend for the 14th annual Fly-in/Air Show sponsored by the Ventura County chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Assn.
The event, which starts today and runs through Sunday, will feature more than 100 planes ranging from home-built to military to ultra-light, said Deborah Torbert, a spokeswoman for the air show.
Aircraft owners will compete for prizes including best of show, people’s choice and best new design awards.
The Southern California wing of the Confederate Air Force, which restores and flies World War II-era aircraft, will have an open house of the hangar and museum during the show.
Torbert said this year’s theme will be “Twenty-Five Years Since the Moon Landing,” honoring the Apollo 11 spacecraft mission. NASA Col. Carl Meade will be the keynote speaker during a Saturday awards banquet.
Admission is $5 for adults, with children under 12 admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The show kicks off tonight at 5 p.m. with a speech by Bill Smithey, a retired Naval aviator who will discuss the role of blimps in the military.
Saturday’s events will start with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., with the main portion of the fly-in scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. An aerobatic demonstration is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m., and Saturday’s events conclude with the 5 p.m. awards banquet.
