Don’t Give Trojans Such Low Grades Yet

With 11 of USC’s 30 football recruits not qualifying academically, it shows that John Robinson, with the blessing of Athletic Director Mike Garrett, has returned to the old days of USC by buying athletes at the cost of academics. It’s not Robinson’s dialogue we should listen to, because his actions speak for themselves. Garrett is a perfect cohort, having flourished in the days of dumb USC players, who reflected directly on USC’s academic credibility. Win at all costs. It’s a shame that Robinson, Garrett and USC subscribe to that philosophy.

(Editor’s note: In the Times story referred to by this reader, the figure of 11 was misleading. Six of the 11 players referred to were still attending junior college, with a reasonable expectation of graduating and qualifying. Their lack of qualification remains merely an issue of time, not academic insolvency.)
