SOUTH CENTRAL : Gym to Use Grant for Boxing Gear
The Hoover Street Gym Foundation will use a $48,000 grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles to expand the gym at 7805 S. Hoover St., purchase boxing equipment and increase youth services.
The recent grant is part of a $1-million program set up by the Amateur Athletic Foundation following the 1992 riots to increase youth sports programs in areas affected by the violence.
The gym recently acquired a 10,000-square-foot facility on Washington Boulevard near Downtown.
“They showed us that their program wants to help youngsters and they will get our help,” Barry Zepel, a spokesman for the Amateur Athletic Foundation, said of the gym.
“They are providing an outlet for youngsters to spend time in sports instead of something else.”
The foundation was established with 40% of the profits from the 1984 Olympics.
