* James Ward was named president and chief executive of Advanced Photonix Inc. Previously, Ward was president of Ling Electronics Inc.

He replaces Thomas T. Lewis, who was named chairman. Lewis replaces Bernhardt Denmark, who remains on the board of directors.

Camarillo-based Advanced Photonix Inc. makes electronic photo-detection devices.

* William H. Comte has been named chief executive officer of the Encino-Trazana Regional Medical Center and the North Hollywood Medical Center, both of which are owned by American Medical International Inc.

Comte succeeds Roger Drue, who left recently to head a hospital in Hawaii. Comte came from Birmingham, Ala., where he was senior vice president for the Medical Center Division of Healthsouth Rehabilitation Corp.

* WellPoint Health Networks Inc., a Woodland Hills-based managed health-care company, has appointed Yon Y. Jorden as chief financial officer. Joren was named acting chief financial officer in August and previously was WellPoint’s vice president and controller. Before joining WellPoint, Jorden was vice president and controller of Blue Cross of California, the nonprofit parent company of WellPoint.

* Summit Care Corp. in Burbank announced changes to its board as a result of the merger of Summit Health Ltd. into OrNda HealthCorp. Donald J. Amaral, 41, president and chief operating officer of OrNda, will assume the post of chairman of the board of Summit Care, replacing Don Freeberg, 69, who has resigned.

William C. Scott, 56, president of Summit Care since 1985, has assumed the additional post of chief executive officer, which had been held by Amaral. Keith B. Pitts, 36, executive vice president and chief financial officer of OrNda HealthCorp, has been named to the board, replacing John Anderson, 76, who also resigned.
