LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Court Clerks Stage Job Sickout for 2nd Day
A large number of union court clerks and judicial assistants in Los Angeles County failed to show up for work for a second straight day Thursday.
A court spokeswoman said the absentee rate was about the same as Wednesday’s 71% in state and county courts.
“We expect the impact to be even greater as the cumulative strain is aggravated in the court system,” said J. Timothy Fives of Local 575 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
Court spokeswoman Jerrianne Hayslett said “we have a couple more out” Wednesday in the Downtown County Courthouse. She said 52 of 80 clerks and judicial assistants there called in sick. On Tuesday, 277 of 380 clerks and assistants took sick days.
Fives said 329 of the 380 are members of the association, and that his head count showed that 220 stayed home because of the job action.
Managers and administrators filled in for the absentees and some judges recorded their own proceedings, Hayslett said.
