A train severed the left leg of a man who was lying on the tracks, just a short distance from where the man lost his right leg in a similar accident eight years ago, officials said.

Terry R. Mills had his left leg draped over the rail as he lay on the crossties outside the rails on Monday. The engineer saw him and tried to stop, said Rick Harris, a Norfolk Southern railroad spokesman.

“Monday’s accident was very near the same location in which the other leg was cut off,” Harris said.

Mills, 32, reportedly had been drinking heavily both times he was hit, Assistant Police Chief David Thomason said.

Mills was in stable condition Wednesday at a medical center in Russellville.
