A storm swept across the Sierra on Wednesday, blanketing the historic ghost town of Bodie, Calif., with 1 1/2 feet of snow that piled up at a rate of one inch an hour. Accumulations of more than six inches were common elsewhere.

The heaviest snow fell in the Mammoth Lakes area, where the storm was centered, but rain left 0.5 of an inch of moisture in McDermitt, on the Oregon border, and 0.4 of an inch in Tonopah.

The snow level dropped to around 5,000 feet in the central Sierra, with three to six inches common at the lower levels and five to 18 inches above 8,000 feet. A snow advisory was in effect throughout Wednesday.

At 8,300-foot Bodie, roads were inaccessible because of the snow.

Motorists on U.S. 395 through Alpine and Mono counties also were slowed by the snow. Caltrans reported five inches of snow on 8,036-foot Deadman’s Pass just north of Mammoth Lakes.

South of Lake Tahoe, U.S. 50 picked up 1 1/2 inches of snow overnight on Echo Summit.

A thunderstorm produced rain and small hail in the Reno area, and Humboldt County got a little bit of everything.
