A man was shot in the legs after allegedly pointing an assault weapon at two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies who were chasing him and two other people Friday.

The suspect, who was wounded about 11 a.m., was taken to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center in stable condition, said sheriff’s spokesman Pat Hauser, adding that no deputies were hurt. Authorities withheld the wounded man’s name.

The deputy who fired at the suspect was trying to stop the driver of a car near El Segundo Boulevard and San Pedro Street when the car sped west on El Segundo Boulevard, Hauser said.

Along the way, the suspect in the front passenger seat threw a package out that was believed to contain drugs, Hauser said.

At Imperial Highway, the driver slowed to about 10 m.p.h. and the passenger got out, armed with an assault weapon, Hauser said.

“When the suspect turned and pointed the weapon at the deputies, the passenger deputy fired several rounds from her 9-millimeter duty weapon,” wounding the gunman, Hauser said.

The other two occupants of the car surrendered.
