Bruin Men, Women Hold Second at Pac-10 Track and Field Meet

UCLA placed four shotputters from the men’s team in the top six and got a women’s 3,000-meter victory from Karen Hecox on Friday to hold second place for men and women after the first day of the Pacific 10 Conference track and field championships at Pullman, Wash.

Washington State led the men with 54 points, after Josephat Kapkory won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 10,000-meter run.

UCLA, which is seeking its third consecutive conference team title and sixth in the last 10 years, had 47 points. USC was eighth with 20.5 points.

Balasz Kiss of USC, a sophomore from Hungary and the defending NCAA champion, set a meet record in the hammer, 248 feet 7 inches.

UCLA’s John Godina and Joe Bailey finished 1-2 in the shotput at 64-3 3/4 and 61-9, respectively. Mark Parlin was fifth and Jonathan Ogden sixth.

Arizona led women’s competition with 51 points. UCLA, seeking its second women’s victory in a row, was second with 44. USC was tied for sixth with California and Washington, each with 12 points.
