Wait Until Verdict in Jones Case to Lay Blame

Share

I was amazed by Robin Abcarian’s skill in skewing the facts in Alan Dershowitz’s article to reach her conclusion that the bad guys are Paula Jones and the far right of the political spectrum (“In the Paula Jones Affair, the Burden Is Squarely on the Right,” May 11).

Abcarian chides Jones for waiting three years (within the statute of limitations for this type of action), while remaining mute on the fact that Anita Hill waited more than 10 years before coming forward.

I do not imply that President Clinton is guilty of any charges. That I leave to the jury, unlike most of the media who would find him guilty until he proves himself innocent. But blaming any of this on Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson or Rush Limbaugh is the height of ridiculousness.

Robin Abcarian provided a thoughtful analysis of the reactions of leading women’s rights organizations to the charges of the young lady who’s filed suit against Bill Clinton.

In summation, she indicated that it has only been after years of hard work and activism that awareness of the concerns of women has been elevated. This provided me with a brief moment of satisfaction that perhaps we might be getting somewhere. And then my eye fell on a small item on another page.

Buried there was a tiny report on a gathering of 1,000 women. These women had taken time out of their busy schedules to meet with doctors and discuss women’s health. The lead sentence really says it all: “Pity the poor doctors.”

Can you imagine a meeting that would attract 1,000 men to meet with doctors would be introduced “Pity the poor doctors”? Can you imagine such a meeting not being reported at all--basically, this meeting was not reported in this little article.

Abcarian gave us one step forward; you gave us two steps back.
