Silicon Graphics Unit and Partners Unveil Powerful Chip: MIPS Technologies Inc., along with Integrated Device Technology Inc., NEC Corp. and Toshiba America Inc., unveiled a computer chip they claim is more than three times faster than Intel Corp.’s fastest Pentium. Pentium is the latest in Intel’s x86 line of microprocessors, the brains inside an estimated 75% of the world’s personal computers. Intel shares closed 25 cents lower at $59.50 on Nasdaq. The new MIPS chip, aimed predominantly at the server and workstation markets, can run both Unix and Windows NT software. It will be priced separately by IDT, NEC and Toshiba, said MIPS, a unit of Silicon Graphics Inc.
