PORT HUENEME : Teacher Is State Science Award Finalist

Share

A third-grade teacher at a Port Hueneme school is one of six teachers statewide and one of only three elementary school teachers to be named a finalist for the California Presidential Awards in Science.

Judy Burnett, who teaches at Bard School, will travel to Sacramento in June to receive recognition for the honor.

One of a team of four third-grade teachers at Bard, Burnett teaches science to about 120 students. She sponsors an after-school science club and takes students to the Navy’s construction base in Port Hueneme to use high-tech telecommunications equipment.

A secret of Burnett’s success in the classroom is her genuine interest and enthusiasm about her subject, Bard Principal Deborah DeSmeth said.

“She’s incredibly interested in the field of science,” DeSmeth said. “She has done a lot of background work to make sure she understands her subjects. And she has a love of it that shows through. She gets the kids excited about science.”
