GRANADA HILLS : L.A. to Press Fight Over Landfill Plan

Share

After meeting in closed session, the Los Angeles City Council announced Tuesday that the city will continue its three-year legal battle against a plan to expand the Sunshine Canyon Landfill north of Granada Hills.

Deputy City Atty. Keith Pritzker said the council instructed his office to pursue an appeal of a Superior Court judge’s ruling that would give operators of the landfill the go-ahead to begin the expansion.

The appeal is the latest development in a long-running legal battle that has pitted a coalition of neighboring homeowners and the city of Los Angeles against the landfill operators and the county of Los Angeles, which approved the project.

After winning several rounds in the battle, the city and the homeowners group lost the latest legal challenge, prompting a Superior Court judge to rule earlier this month that he would lift a court order that halts the project.

After its latest loss in the battle, the City Council met to decide whether to continue its legal battle.

Pritzker said the city so far has spent about $560,000 on outside lawyers to fight the expansion. But he said the city is hoping to get the landfill operator and the county to pay for the city’s legal bills.

The homeowners group, called the North Valley Coalition, has already filed a new lawsuit against the expansion.
