CONCERT REVIEW : Grounded for 14 Years, Eagles Prove They Can Still Soar
Does America’s premier rock band of the ‘70s still deliver in the ‘90s? Absolutely.
The Eagles wasted little time Friday night at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in passing Test One in the band’s celebrated reunion campaign.
By midway through the opening show in the Southern California quintet’s first concert tour in 14 years, the band demonstrated that it remains the master of such trademarks as sweet, seductive harmonies and flavorful but concise musicianship.
And the capacity crowd appeared enthralled listening to songs, including the opening “Hotel California” and “New Kid in Town”--songs that speak of personal and social morality in ways that are still relevant.
Yet even the band must realize in performing the old hits of the reunion that the real challenge will be if the group can move beyond the celebration of the old days to write songs that give listeners new reasons to believe. That answer will come in Test Two next year, when the band will have a new album. For now, however, the Eagles are once again flying high.
