Voters must decide four county races this year--sheriff, assessor and two supervisorial seart.
The campaigns have been unusually quiet as strong, well-financed incumbents dominate two races, and Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky appears all but assured to win one of the supervisorial seats. Supervisor Gloria Molina does not face a single challenger in the 1st District.
Yaroslavsky, running for the seat being vacated by the retiring Ed Edelman, has a huge lead in campaign funds as well as name recognition as he takes on two neophyte politicians in the bid to succeed Edelman.
Sheriff Sherman Block is facing five politically unknown challengers in his third reelection bid, while Assessor Kenneth Hahn has amassed more campaign funds and endorsements than his 15 challengers combined.
In each race, a candidate must win a majority of votes cast to avoid a November runoff.
