GLENDALE : Election to Replace Rogan Canceled

Although candidates vying for the Glendale Municipal Court Division 2 seat are still listed on the June 7 primary ballot, the election for the bench vacated by Judge James Rogan has been canceled.

Rogan surprised pundits when he defeated several challengers in a special election last month to assume the Assembly seat of former GOP leader Pat Nolan. Nolan is serving a 33-month prison term for racketeering.

Rogan announced his intention to leave the bench when he became an Assembly candidate. Based on that, five candidates stepped forward to vie for his judge’s seat. After he won the Assembly race, he didn’t officially resign until May 9, which was after the deadline for filing candidacy papers. His delay in resigning resulted in potential candidates for the seat being unable to file in time for the primary.

Voters will be able to choose a candidate to fill the Division 2 judgeship in the November general election.

Candidates running for the vacated seat, including Dona Bracke, Harvey Goldhammer, Steven Lubell, Bruce Mitchell and James Simpson, have been advised of the change, Ventura said.

Voters have not been notified by the registrar’s office and will not receive a mailing announcing the cancellation of the election, Ventura said. The registrar is deciding whether to post a notice on June 7 at polling places announcing the change, she said.
