Fifty years after Allied forces landed in Normandy to drive Nazi troops from France, President Francois Mitterrand on Tuesday invited German soldiers to march in Paris on Bastille Day.

The German military contingent will be part of the European army corps that will parade in the city’s July 14 celebration.

Mitterrand invited German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to attend the Bastille Day parade honoring the French Revolution at the end of a two-day summit in eastern France. The German leader had not been invited to celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of D-day.

It will be the first time German troops have marched on the Champs-Elysees since the Nazi occupation from 1940 to 1944.
