BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Guest of Honor Forced to Miss His Day

Share

It was Brian Anderson Day at Jacobs Field, with about 200 people traveling from Anderson’s hometown of Geneva to see the Angels play the Cleveland Indians.

There was only one problem.

Anderson wasn’t there.

He was in California making his second rehabilitation start for Class-A Lake Elsinore. Considering the tickets already were purchased and the buses reserved, everyone figured they might as well come.

“Everyone is here but Brian,” said Janice Anderson, Brian’s mother. “Everyone’s disappointed, but they understand.”

Perhaps the strangest aspect for the Anderson family is rooting for the Angels. They are lifelong Cleveland fans, and would love to see their team in the playoffs for the first time since 1954.

“We were here Saturday and Sunday cheering for the Indians,” Janice Anderson said, “and now we’re cheering for the Angels. I’ve been an Indians fan all of my life. I knew the names and numbers, and everything, but I don’t have a bit of trouble rooting for the Angels now.”

Anderson was supposed to join the rotation this weekend. The Angels, however, instead decided they want him to pitch on the side once before joining the rotation.

No date has been set for the makeup game, but because Cleveland already has four doubleheaders in the second half of the season, Cleveland Manager Mike Hargrove suggested Aug. 15. That would ruin the Angels’ off-day between series with Detroit and Milwaukee. It’s more likely the game will be rescheduled Sept. 2.

Catcher Greg Myers, also on a rehabilitative assignment at Lake Elsinore, has a pulled muscle behind his left knee and won’t be able to play again until Friday. . . . Reliever Scott Lewis will undergo a bone scan today to determine the cause of persistent pain in his right shoulder.

Pitcher John Farrell will be given at least one more start, the Angels decided Tuesday. Farrell (1-2, 9.00 ERA) is tentatively scheduled to start Monday against Minnesota at Anaheim Stadium.
