Scenic Mulholland Overlook to Open

Share

A cool breeze, the inviting shade of a sycamore, the distant glistening of the sea to the west and the bucolic terrain of a canyon below--all just a taste of Stone Canyon Overlook in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The viewing site located along the Mulholland Scenic Parkway, a quarter-mile west of Beverly Glen, will officially open to the public Monday.

The site, once named Nicada Overlook, was nothing more than a knoll with a bench and a neglected parking lot, according to Paul Edelman, staff ecologist of Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

After 10 years of work and $300,000 in costs, the overlook has been totally revamped. Two 35-foot-wide turrets are surrounded by stone walls and a sycamore tree, with a bench seat on the interior of both turrets. In addition, the overlook has been made wheelchair friendly, with gently sloping ramps that lead to the top of the viewing area.
