PRO-BARBRA: Barbra Streisand found out at her opening concert at The Pond of Anaheim Thursday night (F1) that Orange County folks love her. But not necessarily all her causes. . . . The audience applauded her mention of South Africa’s recent elections and wildly cheered scenes of marchers with pro-choice on abortion placards shown during a video montage. But Bill Clinton’s picture did little for the crowd, even though Streisand hailed the President for having “an exciting and productive year.”. . . . Streisand returns to The Pond tonight.

BARRED AGAIN: For 10 years, Thomas F. Maniscalco dutifully paid his State Bar of California dues with the hopes of resuming his law career if ever released from jail. But now that Maniscalco, 49, has been convicted of second-degree murder March 15 for a Westminster triple slaying, he can stop paying those dues. . . . The State Bar Court this week suspended him. Maniscalco, scheduled for a June 24 sentencing, can be reinstated only if he is successful on his appeal.

PRESSING ON: Liberal radio-TV commentator Bill Press will do a little political one-on-one with shoppers when he takes his KFI 640 AM radio talk show to Fashion Island at noon today. KFI spokesman William Lewis says Press wanted to do a show in Orange County to face off with opinionated shoppers in “deepest, darkest Republicanville.” . . . Typical of Press, who is also state Democratic Party chairman, he recently confronted conservative Dan Quayle at a book signing.

POLITICAL SPLIT: It’s official: Longtime local political consultant Harvey Englander will split from partners Dan Wooldridge and Jerry Pierson over “a difference in philosophy.” Their firm has a hand in the county campaigns of supervisor candidate Haydee V. Tillotson and 70th Assembly District contender Marilyn C. Brewer. . . . Wooldridge, an ex-aide to two former county supervisors, will stay with Pierson. Englander says he will merge with a Washington-based political firm.
