MOORPARK : Senior Citizen Center Director Is Honored
The director of Moorpark’s senior citizens center was one of just three other Californians to be recognized last month by Gov. Pete Wilson for an Outstanding Older Worker Award.
Carol Ghens, 59, who began working at the senior center when it opened a year and a half ago, said the award was as much for the senior center as it was for her work as its director.
“I feel the award is a measuring stick for what we’re doing at the center,” she said. “We have a fine program.”
Ghens previously worked for 33 years at the Los Angeles Unified School District as a youth services coordinator.
The organization has made a reputation among Moorpark’s 1,800 seniors for activities ranging from low-cost medical exams to country and Western dancing.
Gayle Wilson, the governor’s wife, presented the award to Ghens at a ceremony in late May. Ghens received the award in the category of public service. The other awards were for work in business and nonprofit organizations.
