NO CRACKDOWN: The arrest of 17 alleged bookmakers (A1) should not strike fear in the hearts of office poolers. Sheriff’s Lt. David Kading said that while gambling at the office is illegal, cracking down on informal Super Bowl pools among friends at work is not a priority. “We take action against people selling pools only on complaint,” said Kading.

VOTE VETERAN: After 44 years as a precinct inspector, Theresa Wessig, 68, has seen it all on election day. . . . That includes a stack of misplaced ballots. When the Canoga Park woman saw them lying neglected on the floor on her first election night, she promptly passed out. Wessig, who didn’t finish the recount that morning until 4 a.m., laments today’s low voter turnouts and cynicism but has not become cynical herself. “I always think it will get better,” she said. Voters go to the polls today to cast ballots in a variety of races.

FIVE O’CLOCK WORLD: For thousands of young people, the livin’ isn’t easy in the summertime. They are punching time clocks on a variety of jobs as movie ushers and swimming instructors. And they are the lucky ones. Despite signs of economic recovery in the San Fernando Valley, youth unemployment is close to a five-year high. (Valley Business, page 10)
