GLENDALE : District Applies for Preschool Grant

Share

School officials are applying for a $1.3-million federal grant to provide preschool programs for about 300 low-income children that would include “twilight sessions” scheduled four days a week from 4 to 7 p.m.

The later sessions, which would be held in addition to 3 1/2-hour morning sessions four days a week, are designed to help working parents become more involved in their child’s education, said Georgia McAninch, director of child development programs for the Glendale Unified School District.

If the district is awarded the grant, classes would be held in the existing Head Start facility at Pacific Avenue and Riverdale Drive, and also at the district’s Cerritos and Franklin child development centers.

The grant would help the district provide activities, meals, and medical and social services to low-income children from the age of 3 until they enter kindergarten.

Administering a Head Start program would be a natural extension of the district’s child development programs, McAninch said.

There is a waiting list for children to enter one of the district’s four preschools, which serve about 400 students.
