Simi School Board Votes to Charge Bus Fares
Simi Valley parents who want their children to ride the school bus next year will have to pay annual fares that start at $300 per child, with lower rates for a second and third child in the family.
The Simi Valley school board approved the fare schedule on a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, with board member Debbie Sandland opposed.
The board decided to charge parents for bus service in an effort to recoup district funds spent on transportation. Administrators expect the bus fees to generate $190,000.
Officials expected total bus ridership to drop by 25% as more students walk to school or are driven by their parents.
