THOUSAND OAKS : School Board OKs 5% Hike in Bus Fare

Share

Riding the bus to school in Thousand Oaks will be a little more expensive this fall.

The Conejo Valley school board on Thursday unanimously approved a 5% increase in school bus fares. A semester’s worth of round-trip rides will now cost $190, up from $180 this school year. One-way rides for a semester will cost $100, up from $95.

School officials said the fare hike was necessary to cover inflation. The Conejo Valley Unified School District began charging parents for bus service in 1992 as a way of recouping $600,000 spent on transportation from the district’s general fund. Even with the higher fees, the district still expects to subsidize bus service by about $20,000 next year.

Special-education students do not pay for bus service, nor do students who qualify for free or reduced-fare rides. About 6% of the district’s 17,000 students rely on school bus service, officials said.
