Poll Exposes Political Ignorance

Share

* Your front-page article on the recent Times Orange County Poll (“Few Voters Have Confidence in County Leaders,” May 31) seems to equate confidence in and performance by our county leaders with how well they are known by the public.

That is a totally misleading perception!

In fact, two of the least-known public servants in your poll, 4th District Supervisor William G. Steiner and Dist. Atty. Michael R. Capizzi, are two of the best and most effective leaders we have in county government today.

As a former high school government teacher, I know all too well the “unawareness” of the electorate at large in Orange County.

However, when you get down to local constituencies who are directly affected by decisions, and to the evaluation by those who carry out our leaders’ decisions, you receive a true impression of who is doing a good job.

Name recognition is not everything, and it is much easier to receive negative attention these days than public adulation.

After exposing our lack of awareness as an electorate in Orange County, it is time for The Times to redouble its efforts to make us aware of our local leaders.

Perhaps developing more materials for our schools would be a start. In the process of learning, we can always use more leadership.
