Sweeping Change: Franz Beckenbauer, perhaps the most complete player in the history of the game, revolutionized the position of sweeper. He turned it into an attacking as well a defensive role. Beckenbauer roamed from side to side both in front of and behind the defensive line, occasionally launching an attack, sometimes advancing into the opponent’s penalty area to score goals.
