At the school attended by two students who were slain early this year in a carjacking, plans are under way to make sure the 19-year-olds are always remembered.
Go Matsuura and Takuma Ito were fans and students of film, so Marymount College is trying to establish an endowment fund to create the Ito/Matsuura Film Series.
It hopes the event will become an annual film and lecture series featuring the work of American directors.
“After the funeral services, I met with their parents (from Japan) and all members of their families and we talked about ways to remember them,” college President Thomas McFadden said.
“We discussed many ideas, and I suggested a series on Japanese films, but they said no, they liked American films.” The school is trying to raise $20,000 to $30,000 to fund the film festival.
Matsuura and Ito were slain in a San Pedro carjacking on March 25.
Donations can be made to the Ito/Matsuura Film Series, Marymount College, 30800 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rancho Palos Verdes 90274. Information: (310) 377-5501.
