$112 Million Spent in Area by Film, TV Firms

The motion picture and television industry spent $112 million in South Bay communities in 1992, according to a study released this week.

The study was the first attempt by the Hollywood entertainment industry to pinpoint how much it contributes to the economy in California.

Commissioned by the Public Affairs Coalition of the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers, the study’s figures are three times previous estimates.

Total payroll by all movie, television and commercial production companies in California was $7.4 billion, the study reveals.

Companies paid another $8.9 billion to suppliers for goods and services related to production. And the industry generated more than 534,000 direct and related jobs.

Money spent on payrolls and goods and services in the South Bay: $38 million in Manhattan Beach, $8 million in Rancho Palos Verdes, $26 million in Torrance, $21 million in Redondo Beach and $19 million in Hermosa Beach.

Paramount TV Group Chairman Kerry McCluggage said California is weakest in retaining TV location work, such as television movies and one-hour dramas.

“While 95% of sitcoms are made here, California is losing 60% of TV movies (to other areas),” he said.
