OXNARD : New School to Be Named for Teacher
The Oxnard Elementary School District will officially name its newest school after Robert J. Frank, an instructor who taught in the district for 30 years, during a dedication ceremony Saturday.
Frank was recognized for his extensive after-hours work with students as a science teacher. Frank died in 1983, three years after his retirement.
“He impressed us because of his dedication to the kids,” said James J. Suter, chairman of the Oxnard school board. Suter, who worked with Frank for 30 years, said Frank drew praise not only for his efforts in the classroom but also for helping children with “a lot of after-school activities like forming a rocket club and coaching basketball.”
The dedication ceremony, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., will feature Assemblyman Nao Takasugi (R-Oxnard) and Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez as speakers. The Army will have a color guard ceremony, and students from Haydock Intermediate School will sing patriotic songs.
The new Robert J. Frank Intermediate School, 701 N. Juanita Ave., is designed to handle 1,200 students.
Some of the first students to use the new school are those who attended Haydock, which is scheduled to close July 28 for renovations.
