LAGUNA BEACH : Disaster Recovery Center Closing Today
After serving about 1,000 local residents victimized by last year’s fires, the Community Disaster Recovery and Preparedness Center will close its doors at 664 N. Coast Highway today.
Organizers of the joint state and federal program are waiting for new funding sources and hope to reopen the office for another three to six months.
In the meantime, those interested in contacting the organization can go next door to the Laguna Fire Relief Coalition for assistance, center manager David Sabaroff said.
The center offered a wide range of disaster relief and emergency preparedness services, “a brand new concept that had never been tried before,” Sabaroff said. “Overall, I think we’ve been very successful and we’d like to keep going.”
The fires destroyed 366 homes in Laguna Beach last October, causing millions of dollars in damage.
The center opened in December with funding for six months. Sabaroff hopes to share office space with another nonprofit organization.
“Some of us at the center feel like we should stay open for a year,” he said.
