HAULIN’ FOOT: If you see 13 men...

HAULIN’ FOOT: If you see 13 men and one woman running near Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach before daylight today, your feet might ache just thinking about what’s ahead of them. They’re taking off in a multi-company sponsored Trans America foot race, which will wind up 3,000 miles and 64 days later at New York City’s Central Park. In two previous annual races, half the field failed to make it.... Officials figure it at 4 million footsteps and nearly half a million burned up calories.

KEY TO CITY: Seal Beach has jail space to rent, and Cypress is among the cities interested. Cypress Police Chief Daryl Wicker contends it would be considerably cheaper than the $159 per prisoner the city pays for an Orange County Jail booking.... When City Council members this week asked Wicker if the city would be locked in the new arrangement with Seal Beach proved unsuitable, he said straight-faced: “We would have an escape clause.”

HOLE-IN-CLOSE: Remember that hole-in-one contest in Huntington Beach where you could win $1million for an ace at Meadowlark Golf Course? The city was insured just in case, of course. Nobody won, but Jeff Stewart of Fountain Valley did get close to the pin--about nine feet--in the recent contest.... And the consolation prize wasn’t bad--a trip to Paris for two. Says Stewart: “I was happy with the shot because I knew it would be tough to beat.” The event raised $8,000 to benefit the city’s Fourth of July celebration.
