MISSION VIEJO : Library Building Effort Intensifies

Share

To help raise money for construction of a new library, a foundation has declared June as Mission Viejo Library Month.

The city has agreed to match all money donated to the Mission Viejo Library Foundation for its building fund.

In addition, the Mission Viejo Co. has agreed to put up $10,000 when a like amount has been raised.

But foundation members also are working for community donations. City officials currently favor a 25,000-square-foot building that would cost an estimated $5 million to build.

The drive to build a new library received a huge boost last week when the county agreed to turn over its branch library to the city, including all tax revenue paid by Mission Viejo taxpayers to run the county branch.

The city already has purchased a site on Marguerite Parkway and La Paz Road for the library for about $2.5 million. In addition, the city is working on a land swap with a developer--a 7 1/2-acre, city-owned parcel on Los Altos Street for a four-acre plot next to the library site. The difference in value will also be used to build the library.

Donations to the library fund can be sent to the Mission Viejo Library Foundation, P.O. Box 2000-373, Mission Viejo, CA 92690.
