South Korea scored twice in the final six minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with a shorthanded Spain in their World Cup group C match on Friday.

Spain appeared to be coasting to victory with second half goals by Barcelona reserve team strikers Julio Salinas and Juan Goikoetxea.

But the spirited South Koreans refused to give up and pulled a goal back through Hong Myong-bo in the 84th minute.

The Spanish defence began to get the jitters and Seo Jung-won scored a dramatic equaliser in the final minute.

Spain had been reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute when captain Miguel Angel Nadal was sent off after he tripped Ko Jeong-woon on the edge of the box.

But goalkeeper Jose Canizares, in for suspended Andoni Zubizarreta, saved Spain with two superb stops in the second half, one with his legs from Hwang Sun-hong 10 minutes before halftime.

Spain, who adopted a 4-4-1 formation to replace their 5-4-1 starting line-up, came out fired up in the second half and took the Koreans by surprise when substitute Jose Caminero set up Goikoetxea on the right in the 51st minute.

His cross found Salinas and the deadly striker needed no second chance.

Goikoetxea appeared to have sealed victory with a headed second goal five minutes later, set up by Caminero who had two shots blocked before chipping the ball back across the face of the goal.

The Koreans, notorious in the qualifying rounds for fading in the closing minutes, refused to be beaten.

They have never won a World Cup tie but they could have ended up winners as Spanish defender Rafael Alkorta robbed Seo in the box with the goal at his mercy four minutes before he equalised.

Spain had dominated until Nadal was dismissed. The Koreans then began to look quite threatening.

From the resultant free kick on the edge of the box, Hong Myung-bo sent a fierce shot curling around the wall which goalkeeper Canizares did well to save.

Canizares saved Spain again 10 minutes before halftime when he charged out to deny top striker Hwang Sun-hong with his legs after the Korean broke through.

South Korea, a far more attacking side than when they played in the 1990 finals, also went close twice in the first half with long-range shots, one going agonisingly wide from midfielder Lee Young-jin.
