The Times of London, from Chicago: “The World Cup USA 94 got off to a faltering start at Soldier Field last night. Diana Ross, first lady of American soul, was supposed to enter the arena and kick a ball from the penalty spot towards the center of goal, but she kicked it wide.

“Nevertheless, the goal opened impressively to reveal the banners of the 24 competing nations, a symbolic welcome later endorsed by President Clinton to demonstrate that his country was ready to seek a place in the history of the world game. . . .

The Manchester Guardian, from Chicago: “Those Americans convinced that the World Cup is going to be unspeakably boring were handed some hard evidence yesterday when the 1994 tournament began--in keeping with ancient tradition--with an insufferably dreary and low-scoring match. . . .

“The players, like the 63,000 spectators, had to contend with ludicrous conditions. The temperature was 95 degrees in the shade. . . .

“Usually the sporting affairs of the planet are arranged for the benefit of American television. This time the boot was on the other foot. The game began at 2 p.m. on a working Friday, so it could be seen in European prime time. . . .”
