Representatives from five Ventura County cities were selected Tuesday to serve on a powerful countywide board that will shape air pollution policy.

The new Air Pollution Control Board members will be Oxnard Mayor Manuel Lopez, Thousand Oaks City Councilwoman Judy Lazar, Ventura City Councilwoman Rosa Lee Measures, Fillmore City Councilman Mike McMahan and Moorpark City Councilman Pat Hunter.

Ojai City Councilwoman Nina Shelley and Port Hueneme Mayor Orvene Carpenter will serve as alternates.

The board members were selected Tuesday at a meeting of the Assn. of Ventura County Cities, which includes elected officials from each of the county’s 10 cities.

Tuesday’s action gives Ventura County cities a voice on the air pollution board for the first time. The city leaders will serve with the five county supervisors, who formerly made up the entire board.

The equal city and county representation is required by a state law approved last year.

Ventura County is classified by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency as a region with a “severe” air quality problem, despite improvements in recent years.
