COMPTON : Senate Panel Rejects Plan for Prison Facility

Share

A controversial bill that could have brought a prison holding facility to Compton was killed Tuesday night by the State Senate Judiciary Committee on a 6-1 vote.

The proposed legislation had generated criticism in Compton. The City Council earlier this year adopted a resolution opposing the facility. Critics said the city has no room and that building such a structure would have a negative impact on the city.

The legislation had been backed by Assemblyman Willard H. Murray Jr. (D-Paramount), who said the facility would employ 1,000 people after construction and have an annual budget of $35 million. Murray said he would introduce the bill again in the next legislative session.

The bill mentioned construction of a prison in Southern California. But Murray favored building the 2,000-bed multistory holding center in Compton to house inmates 45 to 90 days before they are moved to state prisons.
